Dear Carnegie Coach:
The recent economic times have been hard on the company I work for. The times have caused a few changes to occur within the company, and they have affected the team that I was working with. The teamwork that we previously had has dropped off a little bit. Do you have any advice on how we can continue to develop our team relationship even during the change that we are going through?
With the current economic times there is a great need for teamwork within organizations. The main force in driving teamwork has always been the relationships amongst the team members. To effectively deal with the change management process, relationships need to be trusting, supportive and respectful. Here are some principles that will allow your teams to prosper even during times of change.
• Don’t criticize, condemn or complain – Dale Carnegie said that any fool can criticize. It’s easy to find fault in others and the organization during the uncertainty of change. Instead of condemning the actions of others or boring people with our complaints, let’s look for the strength in others.
• Look for the positive aspect of things – Focus on the traits we admire and appreciate in others. Focus on the aspects of the organization that inspire and motivate us.
• Become generally interested in others – During change many of us tend to withdraw into our own concerns. We become self-focused and anxious about the impact of the change on our careers. Instead you should become interested in others, focus on them and learn from them.
• Listen – During time of change it is natural to be thinking of your own concerns much of the time. Try to encourage the other people in the organization to talk, and see if you can be empathetic and understanding.
• Make the other person feel important – It’s not uncommon to feel a little lost and unimportant when our work environment is shifting around us. If we feel this way, certainly others do as well. Take the time to let others on the team know that you think their contributions are important.
