The book how to win friends and influence people , first published in 1936, was one of the original self-help books. It was a manual for salesmen and businessmen to deal with co-workers and business people. Nearly 75 years later, it is still applicable today.

There are four chapters to this book and each provides a list of tips for handling people, making people like you, winning people to your way of thinking, and being a leader.

Be honest and sincere, don’t criticize or complain, and be encouraging are the three principles discussed in the first chapter, “The Fundamental Techniques in Handling People”. Although they are rather obvious principles they are important not just in business but in everyday life as we interact with others. It is important that we treat each other with kindness and respect if we expect to receive respect in return .

The second chapter, “Six Ways to Make People Like You”, is also important in all areas of life. From a simple smile to taking an interest in someone else’s life, this chapter addresses many fundamental ways to make others feel valued, giving them the opportunity to reciprocate.
“Win People to Your Way of Thinking” is the third chapter and one of the most applicable in the business setting. There are often disagreements in the workplace over how tasks should be done and how different situations are handled. This chapter demonstrates the best ways to confront and handle these situations without damaging the working relationship.

Finally, chapter four, “Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment”, describes the best ways to charge by motivating others and not shutting anyone out.

“How to Win Friends and Influence People” is a timeless classic that helps us navigate many of the most difficult relationships in our lives both at home and at work.
